Resolution 2015-07

In the matter of proclaiming all City properties tobacco smoke free environments

WHEREAS, tobacco is the leading preventable cause of premature deaths and disabilities in the United States; and

WHEREAS, tobacco related chronic disease costs Oregonians almost $2.5 billion each year in medical expenses and lost productivity; and

WHEREAS, there is no safe amount of secondhand smoke according to the Surgeon General; and

WHEREAS, Hood River has an exceptional quality of life and a commitment to the young people of our community, and

WHEREAS, smoking products, once consumed in public spaces, are often discarded on the ground requiring additional maintenance expenses, diminish the beauty of the recreational facilities, and pose a risk to toddlers, pets and wildlife due to ingestion;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED the City of Hood River adopts a tobacco/smoke free policy on all City owned properties.
