A Resolution of the City of Hood River, a municipal corporation of Oregon, expressing support of efforts to restore rail passenger service to Hood River along the former Amtrak Pioneer route and requesting the Oregon congressional delegation continue its efforts toward restoration of passenger rail service to the area in accordance with the Passenger Rail Improvement Act. of 2009.

WHEREAS, the passenger rail service for the Hood River area provided by Amtrak on the Pioneer route was discontinued in 1997: and

WHEREAS, a need for diversified transportation options available to Hood River area residents and visitors to the City exists; and

WHEREAS, the Passenger Rail Improvement Act of 2008 directed Amtrak to perform a study regarding the restoration of passenger rail service over all or part of the Seattle-Portland-Boise-Denver-Chicago Pioneer route no later than October 16, 2009; and

WHEREAS, restore passenger rail service would contribute to economic activity in the Hood River area, which in turn might increase rail use and increase businesses opportunities for Amtrak; and

WHEREAS, Oregon congressional delegation has requested that Amtrak expedite it’s study on the return of passenger rail service along the Pioneer route, noting that the route represented the only major intercity transportation link to the rest of the nation for many rural Oregonians; and

WHEREAS, the City Council has determined it to be in the best interest of the citizens of Hood River to endorse and encourage the return of passenger rail service to the City;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HOOD RIVER that the City of Hood River hereby encourages Amtrak to restore daily passenger rail service to Hood River;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be provided to Hood River’s congressional delegation along with a letter expressing the request of the City Council that the delegation continued to fully support the effort to bring about the restoration of passenger rail service to this area.

Approved by the Hood River City Council the 13th day of April, 2009, to take effect immediately.
