The Hood River Police Department is involved with several activities focused on child safety and child-police interaction. This includes Lunch with Kids, Kid’s Fingerprinting, Bicycle Rodeo, and Parent Aid. HRPD personnel will also work with schools, parents, and clubs to provide safety talks. To request participation by HRPD please call the business office at 541-387-5256 Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Lunch with Kids is a program where police officers spend some unstructured time with kids at school during the lunch hour. One HRPD Officer spends a lunch period, and part of a lunch recess period, with a group of May Street Elementary School children twice per month. This social period helps form positive links between children and police.
Bicycle Rodeos are conducted on a request basis. Requests usually come from area schools, but clubs such as Scouts, or home school groups, may request a bicycle rodeo. The rodeos are set up to help children learn about bicycle safety, and to learn about how to follow the rules of the road. For more information, or to make a request, please call the business office at 541-387-5256 Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Parent Aid: The Hood River Police Department is a participating agency in the Parent Aid program. Parent Aid is a voluntary, simple and confidential urinalysis drug-testing program designed to help parents identify drug abuse problems in their kids before disaster strikes. The Parent Aid test is free of charge to a parent of any child under 18 years of age. HRPD participates in this program as a partner with the Oregon Association of Chiefs of Police. The most common scenario for using this test is when a parent suspects their child is using illicit drugs, but the child denies. A positive test result can help the child get past the denial stage of abuse. HRPD’s participation is strictly for the convenience of the parent and child. As police officers, we know how devastating drug abuse can be to individuals and families. For more detailed information click here.
To request a free drug screen please call the HRPD business office at 541-387-5256 Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. All results are confidential and WILL NOT be used for criminal prosecution. The free screen may not be conclusive and may be followed by more specific tests at the parents’ option. The child being tested MUST cooperate voluntarily – no force will be used to obtain a sample. Only trained HRPD personnel will perform the test, and the sample is provided by the child, unaccompanied, in complete privacy. A parent may choose to accompany the child during the sampling.
Other Kid’s Programs: HRPD is always open to other ways we can interact with kids in the schools, with home schooled children, or during extracurricular events. For more information, or to make a request, please call the business office at 541-387-5256 Monday to Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
