Sunrise Division

Hood River Police Department’s Sunrise Division is a program to help fill an assistance gap in Hood River. While there are many social assistance programs in the community that provide help to indigent and in-crisis persons, most of those services are only available during business hours. The Sunrise Division provides limited assistance to a wide variety of persons at any time of night or day including weekends and holidays. The Sunrise Division is wholly funded by donations and community fundraisers. Funds are distributed by on-duty police officers through the use of vouchers with cooperating businesses.

The HRPD Sunrise Division is most commonly used to provide meals, lodging, and/or fuel for indigent or stranded persons. It can also be used to help people in any sort of crisis on a case by case basis. For example, Sunrise assisted an elderly community member by replacing a broken window in her home as winter was approaching. Sunrise also assisted a local uninsured family when its sole bread-winner was temporarily disabled due to an accident.

Sunrise will always consider requests for assistance, but assistance is limited. Assistance may be limited to one time per person or family unit in six months. Priority may be given to families, and single moms. Requests for assistance are usually received by the Hood River County Dispatch center through a 9-1-1 or non-emergency call. Requests are frequently made directly to police officers and sheriff’s deputies through direct contact while on patrol.

Persons requesting assistance at any time should call the non-emergency number to the Hood River County Dispatch Center at 541-386-2121. A dispatcher will then request a Hood River police officer to contact the requestor. Persons requesting assistance will be asked to provide identification and will be subject to a check of their driving status (if receiving a fuel voucher), and a check for active arrest warrants (in all cases).
